Babachir Lawal Says APC Leaders Backing Opposition To Remove Tinubu

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has claimed that several high-ranking members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including governors, are quietly supporting the growing opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a TV interview on Tuesday, Lawal said that although many of these APC loyalists are yet to speak openly, they are already aligning themselves with efforts to unseat President Bola Tinubu at the next polls.

Lawal recently resigned from the APC, citing internal repression and what he described as the party’s failure to accommodate dissenting views. He said the atmosphere in the ruling party had grown toxic, with even mild criticism being viewed as betrayal. According to him, the APC’s internal structure has left many of its members feeling frustrated and powerless.

He revealed that for some time, he had been working from within the party to support alternatives he believed were better for Nigeria. He noted that politics in the country has evolved to the point where individuals remain in one party while advancing the interests of another—a tactic he claimed was perfected by current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Lawal referred to Wike as the master of cross-party politics, saying others were now adopting the same approach.

According to Lawal, many former allies of President Tinubu are disillusioned with his leadership style and the direction of his administration. He said several APC figures, including those who once campaigned vigorously for Tinubu, have grown concerned about the president’s performance and the influence of unelected individuals in the government.

He stressed that politics should be about service, not loyalty to a party that is no longer delivering results. For Lawal, a coalition of political forces, even those formerly inside the APC, is not only necessary but already in motion. The goal, he explained, is to replace what he described as a non-performing government with one that truly prioritizes the needs of Nigerians.

He argued that there is nothing wrong with people who once backed the president deciding to support an alternative. According to him, those seeking change are not driven by bitterness, but by the desire to see better leadership in the country.

The comments from Lawal reflect the rising tension within the APC and the steady momentum behind the emerging opposition front. With the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition gaining traction, it remains to be seen how much internal pressure the ruling party can withstand as 2027 approaches.
