Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has suspended Akintunde Akinyemi, the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area, over allegations of engaging in partisan political activities.
The governor’s media aide, Kayode Akinmade, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, saying the State Executive Council approved the suspension under Section 52(1) of the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law, 2021.
According to Akinmade, the suspension will remain in force pending a detailed investigation into complaints about the monarch’s conduct.
He said the decision was communicated in a letter dated October 20, 2026, signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat.
The government reportedly acted following several complaints alleging that the traditional ruler had participated in openly partisan political activities, some of which he allegedly publicised.
Akinmade said the state government considered partisan political involvement by traditional rulers contrary to customary law and prohibited by statute. He added that such conduct could undermine the dignity of traditional institutions and threaten peaceful coexistence among residents with different political affiliations.
He said the suspension was intended to protect peace, order and good governance in Ogun State, particularly within Iselu Kingdom, while the allegations were reviewed.
Under the terms outlined in the suspension letter, Akinyemi was directed to vacate the Eselu palace and stay away from the premises throughout the suspension period.
He was also prohibited from presenting himself as the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom or using any symbols and items associated with the traditional office, including crowns, beads, a beaded staff, an irukere and other royal paraphernalia.
The monarch was further instructed to attend any meeting or hearing convened by the state government to investigate the allegations against him.
The letter was copied to the secretary of Yewa North Local Government and the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, for their information and necessary action.
