The Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached Blessing Agbebaku, days after he was removed as Speaker amid an ongoing leadership crisis in the legislature.
Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, had earlier lost his position as Speaker after lawmakers moved against him. Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo I Constituency, was subsequently elected to lead the Assembly.
Idaiye assumed the Speakership on August 17, 2026, following Agbebaku’s removal from the position.
The Assembly later suspended Agbebaku indefinitely as lawmakers also carried out changes to other leadership positions within the House.
Jonathan Ibhamawu, representing Esan West Constituency, was removed as Majority Leader and replaced by Ojiezele Osezua Sunday of Esan South-East Constituency.
Addeh Emankhu Isibor, who represents Esan North-East I Constituency, was also removed as Deputy Majority Leader. He was replaced by Inegbeboh Ojie Eugene, representing Igueben Constituency.
However, the Assembly took further action against Agbebaku on Monday, August 24, when lawmakers formally converted the earlier removal process into an impeachment.

Idaiye said the impeachment had the support of 17 lawmakers. He explained that the notice for Agbebaku’s removal had already been presented during an earlier sitting by the Majority Leader.
According to the new Speaker, the decision to proceed with impeachment followed the failure to properly present and document Agbebaku’s resignation from the Speakership after his suspension.
The lawmakers therefore decided to treat his removal as an impeachment instead of relying on the earlier reported resignation.
The impeachment motion was moved by Majority Leader Sunny Ojiezele and seconded by Ahmed Waziri, who represents Etsako Central Constituency.
Following the adoption of the motion, the Assembly directed Agbebaku to return any government property that may still be in his possession.
The lawmakers also warned that security agencies could be involved if the former Speaker failed to comply with the directive or refused to respond to the Assembly.
The latest development adds to the leadership crisis that has recently unsettled the Edo State legislature, with several changes already made to the leadership of the House.
Agbebaku’s formal impeachment now brings another stage of the dispute to a close, while Idaiye continues as Speaker of the Assembly.
