FCT Police Begin Crackdown on One-Way Drivers, Traffic Robbers

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has ordered a stricter enforcement of traffic laws across the territory, targeting motorists who drive against traffic, drive recklessly and engage in other violations that could endanger road users.

The directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Sanusi, to Divisional Police Officers and personnel of the Motor Traffic Division as part of measures to improve road safety and reduce traffic-related incidents.

Sanusi directed police officers to arrest and prosecute motorists found driving against traffic, popularly known as one-way driving, as well as those involved in other dangerous driving practices.

The police commissioner said the enforcement was intended to improve the movement of vehicles, reduce congestion and prevent avoidable deaths and damage to property caused by traffic violations.

He also ordered increased patrols and surveillance on major roads, busy areas, junctions and locations around stop signs where traffic violations are frequently recorded.

The directive also covers traffic robbery, with the police command ordering personnel to identify and arrest criminals who exploit traffic jams and temporary stops to steal from motorists and other road users.

According to a statement by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the commissioner wants officers to step up efforts to prevent criminals from taking advantage of congested roads to dispossess people of their valuables.

Sanusi, however, warned police officers involved in the enforcement exercise against abusing their powers. He directed them to carry out their duties professionally, courteously and within the limits of the law.

The commissioner specifically warned against extortion, harassment, intimidation and unlawful use of force during traffic enforcement. Officers found violating the rights of members of the public, he said, would face disciplinary measures.

The police command also appealed to motorists and other road users to obey traffic signs and regulations and avoid reckless driving or any behaviour that could put other people at risk.
