The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Enugu State in the 2027 election, Uche Nnaji, has pledged to serve only one four-year term if elected governor.
Nnaji signed the undertaking on Friday at Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area during a reception organised by PDP supporters and party stakeholders in his honour.
The candidate said his decision was based on the existing zoning arrangement in the state, adding that he would not seek a second term after completing his first four years in office.
Nnaji said the one-term commitment would allow him to concentrate on governance and the implementation of his development plans rather than spending part of his tenure preparing for another election.
He said he had no intention of holding on to power beyond the period agreed under the zoning arrangement and would hand over after completing his first term.
The PDP candidate also promised to adopt a development-focused approach to governance, saying his administration would place the interests and welfare of residents at the centre of its policies.
Nnaji said he planned to introduce a policy that would see his administration initiate and complete development projects regularly across the state, with the aim of recording visible improvements within his four-year tenure.
He called on residents to support his ambition, promising an administration that would be transparent, people-focused and committed to improving living conditions across Enugu.
The governorship candidate also spoke about taxation, saying government policies should not place excessive pressure on residents and businesses.
He argued that tax policies that make life difficult for citizens or discourage investors should be reviewed or withdrawn.
Nnaji expressed concern over the rising cost of living in Enugu and claimed that some businesses considering investments in the state were choosing neighbouring Anambra because of concerns about taxation.
He said his administration, if elected, would review such policies and ensure that government revenue measures were balanced with the economic realities facing residents and businesses.
A PDP chieftain, Basil Ani, pledged the support of party members for Nnaji and expressed confidence that the candidate would secure victory in the 2027 election.
Ani described Nnaji as a growing political movement with support beyond the structures of the PDP.
He also expressed confidence that the party would retain its strong political presence in Enugu and work towards reclaiming the governorship in the 2027 general election.
