Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has said he is not a voter in Osun State and has no role in deciding the outcome of the state’s governorship election, distancing himself from comments made by an individual who responded to an appeal by music star Davido.

The clarification came after Ambrose Nwogwugwu reacted to Davido’s call on Uzodimma to use his position to encourage a peaceful election in Osun. Davido, whose full name is David Adeleke, is a nephew of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and had appealed to Uzodimma in his capacity as Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Chairman of the APC Osun State Governorship Campaign Council.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media, Oguwike Nwachuku, the Imo governor said he neither authorised Nwogwugwu nor any other person to speak on his behalf regarding Davido’s remarks.

Uzodimma described Davido as “his son” and explained that the singer’s involvement in the Osun election was due to his political interest and not because he would be voting in the state.
He stated that Davido’s presence in Osun was based on his commitment to political activities and not because he was among those eligible to cast ballots during the governorship election.
The governor also said the All Progressives Congress remained committed to peaceful, free and credible elections, adding that the party would continue campaigning for its candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji.

According to him, it is common in democratic societies for political leaders and party members to campaign for candidates outside their home states without being registered voters in those areas.
Uzodimma said his participation in the Osun election was limited to supporting the APC candidate and encouraging a peaceful electoral process.
He further assured Davido of his respect and goodwill, as well as his regard for the people of Osun State.
The governor urged Davido, residents of Osun and the general public to ignore Nwogwugwu’s comments, insisting they reflected personal opinions and not his position or that of the APC governorship campaign council.
He added that the clarification was necessary to prevent any misunderstanding arising from the remarks attributed to Nwogwugwu.
