Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the deaths of former Minister of Finance, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, and former Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Ibrahim Aliyu, both of whom passed away within 24 hours.

Abubakar Alhaji died in Abuja after battling an illness. He passed away while receiving treatment at a hospital in the Federal Capital Territory.

The late elder statesman served as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance from 1990 to 1991 during the military administration of former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida.

Over the course of his public service career, Alhaji occupied several top government positions. He served as Secretary to the Government of the Federation and later represented Nigeria as the country’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
He was also widely known by the traditional title of Sardaunan Sokoto and remained a respected figure in public life long after leaving office.
Hours after news of his death emerged, another prominent political figure, Alhaji Ibrahim Aliyu, also passed away following a prolonged illness.

Reacting to his death, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris expressed sadness over the loss, describing the late former deputy governor as a dedicated public servant who contributed to the state’s growth and development.
The governor said Aliyu would be remembered for his integrity, humility and commitment to serving the people. He also prayed for God to grant his family the strength to bear the loss and for the people of Kebbi State to find comfort during the mourning period.
The deaths of the two former public officeholders mark the end of decades of service to the nation and their respective states, leaving behind records of contributions to government and public administration.
