The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should consider leaving office after his current term if he is unable to bring Nigeria’s growing insecurity under control.

Obi made the remark during an interview on Sunday Politics, a programme aired on Channels Television, where he spoke on the country’s security situation and the quality of leadership needed to address it.

According to the former Anambra State governor, the level of violence and kidnappings across different parts of the country shows that Nigeria is facing a serious challenge that requires a government capable of protecting lives and property.

He referred to recent incidents in Zamfara and Sokoto states, where many residents were reportedly abducted by armed criminals within two days, saying the attacks reflect the worsening state of insecurity.

Obi said the administration’s current efforts have not produced the needed results, adding that the country requires leadership with the ability to respond effectively to the security emergency.
He maintained that if President Tinubu is unable to overcome the crisis, stepping away from the presidency after his first term would be the right decision rather than continuing without delivering better security for Nigerians.
Drawing from his time as governor of Anambra State, Obi said he had handled security challenges in several troubled communities, insisting that effective leadership can make a difference when there is the capacity and commitment to act.
The NDC presidential candidate has consistently criticised the Tinubu administration over insecurity and economic hardship, arguing that stronger measures are needed to restore safety across the country and improve the living conditions of Nigerians.
