The electoral body had earlier insisted that the closing date would not be changed despite complaints from some political parties about technical problems experienced while using its online nomination portal. However, it later decided to give parties more time to complete the process.

In a statement released on Sunday, INEC announced that the deadline, which was originally set for Saturday, July 11, 2026, has now been moved to midnight on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

The commission explained that the decision followed a request from the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), which appealed for an extension on behalf of political parties that were unable to complete the upload of their candidates’ information because of technical difficulties.

The statement was signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.

According to the commission, the revised election timetable has now been updated to reflect the new deadline for submitting the lists of candidates for the presidential and National Assembly elections.

INEC said the extra three days would allow more political parties to complete the nomination process while ensuring that all actions remain in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

The commission also urged all political parties to make full use of the additional time by uploading the names and personal details of their candidates before the new deadline expires on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
