FIFA has provided a fresh update on the race for the Golden Boot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with France captain Kylian Mbappé holding a narrow advantage over Argentina captain Lionel Messi as the tournament enters the semi-final stage.

Both players have scored eight goals during the competition, but Mbappe is currently ahead because he has recorded more assists than the Argentine star.

According to FIFA’s latest standings, Mbappe has provided three assists, while Messi has contributed one. That difference places the French forward at the top of the goalscoring chart despite both players having the same number of goals.

Norway striker Erling Haaland remains in the race with seven goals, even though his country has already been eliminated from the tournament.

FIFA explained that when two or more players finish the tournament with the same number of goals, the first deciding factor is the number of assists credited to each player by the FIFA Technical Study Group.
If the players are still level after comparing assists, the governing body will then consider the total number of minutes played during the tournament. In that situation, the player who achieved the same goal and assist record while spending fewer minutes on the pitch will be ranked higher.
With the semi-finals and the remaining matches still to be played, Mbappe and Messi both have the chance to increase their goal totals as they continue their battle to finish as the leading scorer at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
