Nigeria Democratic Congress chieftain Buba Galadima has opposed the proposed creation of state police, saying it will not end the country’s insecurity.

He argued that if the military and the Nigeria Police Force have struggled to solve the crisis, a new policing system would not make a difference.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE News, Galadima claimed state police could be turned into a political tool ahead of the 2027 elections.

He alleged that governors and the president could use the force to intimidate opponents and influence the electoral process.
He recalled the era of the Native Authority Police, alleging that opposition figures were often arrested on questionable grounds before elections.
According to him, such actions forced many people to leave their communities during that period.
Galadima also warned that state police could worsen ethnic and religious tensions if recruitment favoured certain groups.
He said the proposed system could create more division and fear instead of improving security as the constitutional amendment awaits consideration by state assemblies.
