Fresh discussions on Nigeria’s national minimum wage may begin soon, as the Nigeria Labour Congress said organised labour expects the Federal Government to reopen negotiations.

The development comes nearly two years after the N70,000 minimum wage took effect amid growing concerns over the rising cost of living.

NLC spokesperson Benson Upah said formal talks had not started but could begin at any time.

His remarks followed recent comments by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, who said inflation had reduced the value of the current wage and called for another review.
The last wage agreement was reached in 2024 after prolonged negotiations between the Federal Government, organised labour and employers.
Labour had demanded about ₦615,000 before both sides eventually agreed on ₦70,000 after President Bola Tinubu stepped into the discussions.
Since then, soaring prices of food, transport, rent and electricity have continued to reduce workers’ purchasing power.
NLC President Joe Ajaero has maintained that Nigerian workers deserve a living wage that matches the country’s current economic conditions.
