INEC Chairman Is A Danger To Democracy – Atiku’s Camp

The camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has renewed its criticism of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The concerns were raised by Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, who argued that recent controversies surrounding the electoral body could affect confidence in the election process.

The remarks have added to growing political debate over INEC’s leadership. Attention is increasingly turning to preparations for the next national vote.

Ibe pointed to previous allegations linking the INEC chairman to a social media account accused of making political comments favourable to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

He questioned the credibility of the investigation that later cleared Amupitan of wrongdoing.

According to him, the review lacked independence because it was initiated and funded by the electoral commission. He maintained that doubts over the matter have not been fully resolved.

The opposition camp also raised concerns over reports of an alleged leak involving the personal data of an aspirant in the Nigerian Democratic Congress.

Ibe argued that the controversy raises broader questions about the protection of sensitive information held by the electoral body.

He warned that unresolved issues could damage public trust as the country moves closer to another election cycle. He said strong safeguards are needed to protect electoral integrity.

The allegations come as political parties continue positioning themselves for the 2027 elections. While INEC has previously rejected claims against its chairman, opposition figures insist that questions remain unanswered.
