The union said the move would reduce the quality and standard of the teaching profession.

The state NUT chairman, Chika Chukwudozie, spoke in Awka on Saturday, arguing that teaching should be treated like every other professional career.

She warned that lowering admission requirements would turn Colleges of Education into an “all-comers affair” instead of strengthening the sector.

The union blamed poor teacher welfare, weak infrastructure and lack of incentives for the low interest in education courses.

It urged the government to improve salaries, scholarships, school facilities and career growth opportunities instead of changing admission rules.

The teachers also called for wider consultations before introducing education policies.

They warned that weakening standards in teacher training could damage the country’s education system and affect future national development.
