Falana Faults FG Over Forest Guards Trial

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has criticised the Federal Government over the prosecution of leaders of the Nigeria Forest Security Service, also known as forest guards.

He said the move comes at a time insecurity continues to spread across the country.

The Federal Government recently filed criminal charges against seven leaders of the group at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The charges include illegal possession of firearms, operating an unlawful security outfit and alleged forgery of firearm licences.
Falana argued that the forest guards were helping communities tackle banditry and other security threats.
He called on the Attorney-General of the Federation to immediately withdraw the charges and stop what he described as harassment of local security volunteers.
The senior lawyer also urged the government to absorb the forest guards into the nation’s security structure and provide proper training and equipment.
He questioned why volunteers protecting communities were being prosecuted while former terrorists were reportedly being rehabilitated.
