The decision was announced on Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Mukhtar Gidado, who said the reopening would last for two weeks.

The government explained that the markets are important for residents preparing to buy animals for the Sallah season.

Authorities said security agencies, traditional rulers and local officials would closely monitor activities in the affected markets during the temporary reopening.

The government added that measures had been put in place to ensure peaceful operations and maintain public safety.

The markets were earlier shut down in April after rising cases of cattle rustling, kidnapping, killings and illegal arms dealings linked to some trading centres.

The state government said the earlier action was part of efforts to tackle insecurity in the affected areas.
