Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has defended the construction of homes for judges in Abuja after criticism from the Nigerian Bar Association.

He said the projects would not affect the independence of the judiciary. Wike spoke on Friday while inspecting ongoing judicial projects across the capital city.

The minister said government involvement in building facilities for judges was not unusual.
According to him, past administrations also provided structures for the judiciary and the National Assembly without interfering in their duties.

He insisted the housing projects were meant to improve the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers.
Wike also accused the NBA leadership of double standards, saying the association often receives support from governments for its programmes and conferences.
He argued that such support had never stopped the NBA from operating independently. He maintained that the current projects would help judges focus better on their responsibilities.
The FCT minister said the judges’ quarters were almost completed and ready for inauguration as part of activities marking President Bola Tinubu’s third year in office.
He, however, faulted some finishing work at the Court of Appeal project and directed contractors to correct the issues before delivery.
