Eyewitnesses said the attackers arrived around 5pm and opened fire on spectators and players, causing panic as people ran for safety.

The match between nearby communities had just begun when the gunmen struck without warning.

Residents reported that buildings, including a place of worship, were set on fire during the assault.

Survivors fled the area while many families searched for missing loved ones in the aftermath of the violence.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri visited the affected community and confirmed the death toll, saying security agencies had been directed to strengthen response efforts.

Traditional leaders also raised concerns over possible insider information aiding the attackers as fear spreads across nearby villages.
