The development comes after a recent court ruling linked to the party’s leadership tussle.
The commission based its action on a Court of Appeal judgment delivered in March 2026. A panel of judges partly ruled on a case filed by a party member challenging earlier decisions.

The court set aside some findings of a lower court but relied on INEC records confirming the conduct of the party’s primary election.
The electoral body then reflected the outcome by updating its official records.
However, the SDP rejected the move, describing it as interference in its internal affairs. The party insisted no valid court order was served on it and questioned the legality of the recognition.
Its spokesman, Rufus Aiyenigba, accused INEC of acting outside its powers. He also alleged irregularities and claimed the recognised chairman was no longer a member of the party.
The dispute has deepened tensions within the party ahead of future elections. SDP leaders maintained that their structure remains intact despite the changes listed by INEC.
They warned against external influence and vowed to challenge the decision. The situation adds to ongoing internal conflicts within the opposition party.
