FCT teachers shut schools as strike begins

Teachers under the Nigeria Union of Teachers have begun an indefinite strike in the Federal Capital Territory, leading to the shutdown of public primary and secondary schools.

The action started on Monday following unresolved welfare issues. Schools visited early in the morning were locked, with no staff or pupils on site.

At LEA Ijayapi and LEA Byazhin primary schools in Abuja Municipal Area Council, classrooms were empty and school gates closed.

Students who arrived were turned back as the strike directive took full effect. Parents were advised earlier to keep children at home until further notice.

The union had issued the strike order after a meeting in Gwagwalada, where leaders reviewed earlier agreements with the FCT administration.

They said a previous ultimatum had expired without full action on key demands. These include promotion issues, welfare payments, and implementation of a committee report set up in 2025.

The teachers said the strike would continue until their concerns are addressed. The shutdown has now disrupted learning across public schools in the FCT, with no timeline yet for resumption.
