The army said the troops came under heavy attack but fought back and forced the insurgents to retreat.

Despite regaining control of the area, tragedy struck when the officer moved to assess the situation after the clash.

According to Lt. Col. Sani Uba, the officer’s vehicle hit an improvised explosive device, killing him and six others.

He said the officer acted with courage and led from the front during the operation.

The military expressed grief over the loss, describing the fallen personnel as brave men who gave their lives in service to the country.

It added that their sacrifice would be remembered by the armed forces and the nation.
