Financial Minister Never Admitted Errors – FG

In Nigeria, confusion grew on Sunday over reports that Taiwo Oyedele admitted faults in newly introduced tax laws.

The statement in question came from the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee after comments linked to a legal conference in Lagos.

Officials said the reports misrepresented what was actually said. The issue has since sparked debate across policy and legal circles.

The committee moved quickly to address the reports, insisting the minister never accepted any flaws in the laws. It said claims about a “legislative probe” were inaccurate and based on a wrong reading of his remarks.

According to the clarification, the tax reforms had already been finalised and officially published earlier in the year. Authorities maintained that the narrative circulating online does not reflect reality.

Instead, officials explained that the minister spoke about progress made since the reforms took effect.

They pointed to a sharp rise in business registrations and taxpayer numbers across the country.

The committee also noted that discussions around the reforms were part of ongoing engagement with stakeholders. These talks, it said, are meant to improve implementation over time.

While acknowledging that laws can evolve, the government stressed that any gaps would be handled through future updates. It urged the public to ignore distorted reports and rely on verified information.

The response aims to calm concerns and reinforce confidence in the country’s tax system as reforms continue to roll out.
