Many Stranded As Bridge Collapse In Abuja

Hundreds of commuters were left stranded after a bridge collapsed along the busy Kuje–Gwagwalada road in the Federal Capital Territory.

The incident happened at Chukuku village following heavy rainfall that weakened the structure, cutting off movement between Kuje and Gwagwalada.

The affected road is a key route for residents, traders, and farmers moving goods across the area.

Officials say the project was awarded under the supervision of Nyesom Wike, with construction still ongoing. A temporary bridge had been put in place, but it failed after hours of intense rain.

Motorists faced long delays as traffic built up, forcing many to abandon their vehicles or seek alternative routes. Transport fares also increased as drivers diverted through the longer Kuje–Giri–Gwagwalada road.

Residents said the volume of water from the downpour overwhelmed the bridge, leading to its collapse. Despite the disruption, no injuries or deaths were reported.

Relief came later in the day when the construction company created a temporary access route, allowing vehicles to move again.

The road remains vital for the movement of agricultural produce and daily commuting, making the disruption a major setback for economic activities in the area.
