Abia Plans Exit From National Grid

In Abia State, Governor Alex Otti says the state is preparing to disconnect from the national grid as it boosts its own power supply.

The plan centres on expanding electricity generation in Aba.

The move depends on adding a 125-megawatt gas turbine to Geometric Power, which currently produces 141 megawatts.

Once completed, total capacity will rise to 266 megawatts, enough to serve more areas including Umuahia.

Already, eight local government areas in the Aba ring-fence operate outside the national grid.

The government is now working to extend independent power to the remaining areas, aiming for full state coverage.

The governor also said Abia State University will run on its own power after a planned 15-megawatt project is completed.

He added that the state will not subsidise electricity, promising steady supply at a fair cost.
