Abuja Schools Protest Multiple Tax Demands

Private school owners in Abuja have protested what they describe as multiple taxation by authorities under Nyesom Wike, as a court adjourned their case to April 16, 2026.

The proprietors, under the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, gathered at a Magistrates’ Court in Wuse Zone 2, demanding clarity over overlapping levies imposed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration and the Abuja Municipal Area Council.

They argued that the duplicative demands from both bodies have created confusion, disrupted school operations, and placed heavy financial pressure on institutions.

NAPS President Rukayat Agboola said private schools are already regulated by the FCTA Education Secretariat and should not be subjected to direct demands from multiple agencies.

Legal representative Alexander Oboe explained that the dispute stems from overlapping responsibilities between government bodies, leading to what he described as double taxation on the same schools.

He added that school owners are unsure which authority to comply with, calling for both agencies to harmonise their roles and resolve the issue through dialogue.

The court advised all parties to explore an amicable settlement while proceedings continue.
