Police Commission Responds To Bribery Allegation

The Police Service Commission has denied allegations that senior police officers paid ₦5 million each to secure promotion to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police.

The reaction followed a report published by SaharaReporters which alleged that some officers bribed officials of the commission to move from the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police to Assistant Commissioner of Police.
In response, the commission said the publication raised serious concerns and rejected the allegations completely.

According to the PSC, the promotions were carried out through established procedures and in line with the guidelines guiding its operations.
The commission explained that it is constitutionally responsible for appointments, promotions and discipline of officers in the Nigeria Police Force, except the Inspector General of Police.
Officials also clarified that the role of the Inspector General in the promotion process is limited to recommending officers based on performance and available vacancies, while the final approval lies with the commission itself.
The PSC added that suggestions of a pay for promotion system were insulting to members overseeing the process.
The commission urged the public to ignore the allegations and maintained that promotions within the police force are based on merit.
It also disclosed that it is considering legal action against SaharaReporters over the report, which it said damaged the reputation of the commission.
