ADC Attacks Akpabio Over New Law

The African Democratic Congress has criticised Senate President Godswill Akpabio over his role in the passage of the Electoral Act 2026, accusing him of supporting a law that weakens democratic standards in Nigeria.

The party reacted after Akpabio dismissed opposition concerns while speaking at an event in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, during a reception organised for Oluremi Tinubu.

According to the ADC, the comments suggested that the law was designed to favour the ruling party and silence critics.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party argued that parts of the amended electoral law could weaken public trust in the country’s democratic system and create conflicts with existing constitutional provisions.

The ADC also raised concern about a section of the new law which it said removes certificate forgery as a valid ground for challenging election results.

The party argued that such a provision could send the wrong message about accountability in public office.

Despite the disagreement, the party said it remains focused on building a political alternative and strengthening its structure ahead of future elections, while insisting that Nigerians will judge political leaders by their actions and decisions.
