Thugs Disrupts Wike-Backed PDP Meeting
Chaos erupted in parts of Oyo State on Saturday as suspected political thugs targeted local government congresses organised by the Wike-backed faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Several party members were injured and property destroyed in attacks across multiple locations.
The unrest extended to the residence of former deputy governor Hazeem Gbolarumi in Ibadan, where intruders damaged property.
Sources said Gbolarumi and his aides narrowly escaped harm during the invasion, adding to the political tension in the state.
Witnesses reported that hoodlums stormed congress venues in Ibadan North, Ogbomoso South, Akinyele, and Igboora in Ibarapa Central, assaulting participants and vandalising vehicles in what appeared to be a coordinated effort to disrupt the exercise.
At least ten people were injured and several vehicles damaged during the attacks.
The incidents have intensified rivalries within the party, as factions compete for control of its structure in Oyo State.
The violence raises concerns about security and the smooth conduct of political activities in the run-up to upcoming elections.
