Soludo Under Fire For Defying Court

A fresh dispute has erupted in Anambra after the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo allegedly went ahead with the demolition of shops at Onitsha Main Market despite an existing court order stopping such action.

Human rights lawyer Ikechukwu Obasi raised the alarm, accusing the state government of ignoring a ruling from the Anambra State High Court.

The lawyer said the demolition took place even though the court had earlier restrained the governor and several government officials from carrying out the exercise.

According to him, the order was issued by Justice Joseph Ifeanyi Nweze following a suit filed by traders operating in the Human Fence Zone 1 Line area of the market.
The case was brought before the court by a group of traders led by Izuchukwu Paul Madubuko and represented by Nnamdi Ibegbu (SAN).
The applicants approached the court seeking protection against the planned demolition of their shops, and the order initially brought relief to traders before the structures were reportedly pulled down.
Governor Soludo had earlier defended the demolition as part of plans to remodel the market and improve its infrastructure.
However, Obasi insisted that government authorities must obey court rulings, warning that failure to do so weakens the rule of law and public trust in the justice system.
