Staff Union Stages Protest Against Governing Council

In Okitipupa on Wednesday, staff unions at Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology announced a two-day protest over a dispute with the Governing Council and the continued stay of its chairman, Professor Akinbo Adesomoju.

The action was agreed at a congress held inside the university auditorium.

The Joint Action Committee of SSANU, NASU and NAAT said the protest follows what it described as unlawful steps by the Council, including a directive that union letters must pass through the Vice-Chancellor before reaching the chairman.

The unions argued that the university’s 2008 law does not require such a process for collective trade union matters and insisted that direct contact with the Council chairman is proper.
The groups also renewed their objection to the Council’s refusal to approve recommendations of the Appointments and Promotions Committee, seeking immediate implementation of the appointments of Mr Franklin Olusola Akinpelumi and Mr Paul Adeagbo.
They further questioned Adesomoju’s tenure, claiming the law allows a four-year term renewable once, and argued that any stay beyond that limit breaches the statute.
Despite the planned protest on February 26 and 27, 2026, the unions directed members assigned to duties for the March 4 convocation to carry on with their tasks.
They said they remain committed to due process but will not step back from what they see as a defence of legality and institutional order.
