Reps Demands Financial Minister Resignation

On Wednesday at the National Assembly in Abuja, members of the House of Representatives confronted Nigeria’s top economic officials over the failure to release funds for capital projects in the 2025 budget.

The session quickly turned tense as lawmakers questioned the handling of public finances.

The Finance Minister, Wale Edun, the Budget and Economic Planning Minister, Atiku Bagudu, and the Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Zach Adedeji, appeared before the House Committee on Appropriation to explain why projects across ministries had received no capital funding.

Lawmakers argued that the government recorded higher revenue than expected yet failed to fund approved projects.

During the heated exchange, some lawmakers openly called on the ministers to step aside, accusing them of poor delivery and weak budget execution.

The committee had earlier approved N1.15 trillion to support the capital component of the 2025 budget, but members said implementation remained at zero despite that approval.

In response, Edun said the government stopped relying on money creation to meet obligations and was adjusting debt records and exchange rate gaps.

Bagudu explained that about 70 per cent of the 2025 capital spending had been shifted into the 2026 budget after discussions with lawmakers.

Adedeji maintained that revenue collection was strong, noting that the service surpassed its 2025 target.

The committee later adjourned the hearing for further clarification as concerns over unpaid projects and economic strain continue to grow.
