The recommendation reportedly came from a US panel reviewing global religious freedom, which advised Abuja to revisit laws applied in some northern states.

The suggestion quickly drew criticism from Muslim leaders who see it as foreign interference.

They argue that Sharia courts function within the limits of Nigeria’s Constitution and mostly handle civil and personal matters for Muslims who choose them.

According to them, altering such laws under outside pressure could upset the country’s fragile religious balance.

The leaders urged the Federal Government to handle the matter through local dialogue, warning that sensitive legal issues must be resolved internally to protect unity and stability.
