The treatment is available to Nigerians who meet strict medical criteria. Doctors assess age, overall health, disease severity, and the availability of a suitable donor before approving a patient for the procedure.

Not everyone with sickle cell disorder qualifies for the transplant.

The partnership between the Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria and Lagos University Teaching Hospital has been running the transplant programme since about 2024.

The procedure involves replacing the patient’s faulty blood-forming stem cells with healthy ones from a matched donor. When successful, it can stop the disease completely.

Medical experts, however, note that bone marrow transplantation carries risks and requires careful follow-up care. Patients and families are advised to seek proper counselling and full medical evaluation before making any decision.
