Reps Speak On Tear Gas Clash At National Assembly

The House of Representatives has promised to probe the use of tear gas on demonstrators at the National Assembly in Abuja.

The protesters had gathered on Tuesday to demand electronic transmission of election results.

Lawmakers said the matter would be reviewed to determine what led to the incident.
In a statement by House spokesman Akin Rotimi, the chamber said Nigerians have the constitutional right to assemble peacefully.
It added that citizens must be free to approach Parliament without fear.

While recognising the duty of security agencies to keep order, the House said such tasks must be carried out with restraint and respect for rights.
The House disclosed that its Committee on Media and Public Affairs would engage relevant authorities and apply its oversight powers where necessary.
It maintained that the National Assembly remains open to lawful civic engagement on national issues.
The reaction followed reports that police dispersed the #OccupyNASS protesters with tear gas after they called for changes to the Electoral Act.
Among those present were Oby Ezekwesili, Omoyele Sowore and Adewole Adebayo.
The demonstrators urged lawmakers to mandate real time electronic transmission of results to INEC’s IREV portal before security officers moved in to break up the crowd.
