Fraud Allegations Shake Police Leadership

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has accused Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun of shielding fraudsters, saying the claims stem from his time in detention at Kuje Prison in Abuja.

Sowore linked the allegations to his arrest in October 2025 during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, after which he spent four days at the correctional centre.

He said his situation worsened after visiting detained protesters at the FCT Police Command to help secure their release.

Sowore recalled being warned by a senior officer to stop calling Egbetokun an “illegal IGP” and to halt reports about the police chief.
He also alleged that despite being granted bail, the magistrate handling his case was removed and he was later assaulted in court to ensure his remand.
While in Kuje Prison, Sowore said he met Jesam Michael, described as a major Ponzi scheme operator, who made startling claims.
He added that Michael said he had access to a police unit used to arrest victims who demanded refunds.
Sowore further linked his allegations to recent reports claiming the IGP ordered a digital clean-up after fraud accusations surfaced against Nigerian socialite Nzube Ikeji.
