Nigeria’s Senate has begun steps to change the constitution in a move that could raise the Federal Government’s share of money from the Federation Account.

The push comes at a time when debates over how national revenue is shared have grown louder. Labour unions, civil groups and opposition voices have argued that higher funds going to states have not improved living conditions for many Nigerians.

Despite already holding the largest portion, a bill sponsored by Senator Sunday Karimi seeks to raise the Federal Government’s share further.
The bill passed first reading and aims to adjust sections of the constitution that guide how revenue is split among the three tiers. The sponsor said the plan is driven by rising national duties and financial strain at the centre.
He added that better funding would help with federal roads, banditry and terrorism, and improve the country’s ability to tackle these challenges.
