Magistrates in Cross River State have announced plans to resume an indefinite strike from February 9 after talks with the state government failed to resolve lingering issues.

The decision was taken by members of the Magistrates’ Association of Nigeria following weeks of frustration over unmet commitments.

The association said the strike notice followed a general meeting held in late January, where members agreed that earlier promises made by the government had not been fully honoured.

Although the government implemented promotions and regularised some magistrates, the group said several key welfare and work-related demands were ignored.

The magistrates explained that the unresolved issues have affected their security, welfare and the smooth running of courts across the state.

They warned that continuing neglect could further weaken the justice system, adding that the strike would begin without any further notice if nothing changes.

Among their demands are a 50 per cent pay rise, official vehicles, decent accommodation, renovation of court buildings and payment of salary arrears dating back to 2019.

They also criticised the N15,000 monthly allowance they receive, noting that their colleagues in nearby states earn far higher amounts.
