FCTA Tightens Response to Snakebite Cases

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has pledged to strengthen measures to curb snakebite incidents following the death of Ms Ifunanya Lucy Nwangene, who died after complications from a neurotoxic snakebite.

The administration described the incident as deeply painful and said such deaths should not happen with proper medical response.

The pledge was made by the Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, who expressed condolences to the bereaved family.

She said snakebites remain a preventable public health problem, noting that venomous snakes are commonly found in forests, farms, grasslands, and even around homes within the country.
Residents were advised to take simple safety steps such as wearing protective clothing on farms, clearing surroundings, sealing openings in buildings, and avoiding contact with snakes.
In cases of bites, victims were urged to stay calm, keep the affected limb still, avoid harmful local practices, and seek immediate medical care where antivenom is available.
The FCTA said antivenoms are stocked across its hospitals, supported by ambulance services and emergency response systems.
It added that health facilities must follow approved treatment guidelines, warning that negligence will attract sanctions, while emergency numbers remain open for swift assistance.
