What Lawmakers Say About Makoko, Ikeja Protest

The Lagos State House of Assembly has rejected claims that police officers used tear gas on anti-demolition protesters from Makoko and other communities within the Assembly complex.

The lawmakers also dismissed reports suggesting that activists were arrested under their watch during the protest.

The denial followed widespread reports alleging that demonstrators who marched to the Assembly complex in Alausa were dispersed with tear gas while seeking to present their grievances over demolitions and forced evictions.

The Assembly insisted that the reports did not reflect what occurred within its premises.

According to the Assembly, lawmakers were not involved in any action that led to violence against protesters, nor did they authorise or witness the arrest of activists at the complex.

The leadership maintained that the legislature remains committed to peaceful engagement and due process in handling public concerns.

The Assembly further stated that it respects the right of citizens to express their views and urged the public to rely on verified information, stressing that it would not support any act that undermines democratic expression or public safety.
