FCTA Workers Defy Union Strike Order

Workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration returned to their offices on Thursday, setting aside a directive by the Joint Union Action Committee to continue its strike.

The development followed a stay-at-home instruction issued by JUAC to staff of the FCTA and the Federal Capital Development Authority, urging them to keep away from work despite a court ruling ordering a suspension of the industrial action.

Checks across major FCTA and FCDA offices in Abuja showed normal activities, with workers attending to official duties. Some staff members, who spoke anonymously, said their decision was guided by respect for the court order and concern over their monthly salaries.

One worker explained the situation clearly, saying, “The court has said we should come to work and we have no option than to come to work.

Also, this is the last week of the month of January and we are expecting salary to be paid. If we don’t come to work, how are we going to get our salary?”

The return to work came after the National Industrial Court in Abuja granted an injunction requested by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and the FCT Administration, directing union members to halt the strike until the case is decided.

In response, the Acting Head of the FCT Civil Service, Mrs Nancy Sabanti, issued a circular instructing all government offices to reopen fully. The directive ordered strict monitoring of attendance registers and immediate compliance with the court’s decision.
