The declaration came shortly after authorities sealed the popular commercial hub in response to continued sit at home compliance, which the government said was hurting economic activity.

The traders, speaking collectively through informal gatherings within the area, linked the shutdown to the wider agitation in the South East, insisting that their support for Kanu remains firm despite pressure from the state. They described the action as a show of solidarity rather than defiance.

According to them, the prolonged closure of the market has worsened daily survival for thousands of families who depend on trading activities.

They called on both state and federal authorities to seek peaceful solutions that would allow markets to reopen fully.

The development reflects the growing tension between government efforts to restore normal economic life and public sentiment tied to ongoing political and security issues in the region, with traders urging dialogue to prevent further disruption.
