Workers in all six Abuja area councils joined the ongoing strike, deepening the shutdown of public services in the Federal Capital Territory and increasing pressure on the FCT administration.

The decision followed an emergency meeting by local government workers who resolved to align with the wider labour action in the capital.

The directive came from the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees in the FCT, which ordered its members to withdraw their services from Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

Union leaders said the move was in line with a nationwide call by organised labour and instructions from the union’s national leadership.

Union officials explained that the strike was also meant to push forward unresolved demands already placed before the FCT Minister and a ministerial committee.

Members were urged to remain united and committed until their concerns, including welfare and outstanding entitlements, are addressed.

The development came as the National Industrial Court in Abuja prepared to rule on a suit filed by the FCT Minister and the FCT Administration against leaders of the Joint Union Action Committee.

The legal action seeks to halt the strike, which has already brought government offices to a standstill, despite authorities insisting that most demands have been met, a claim the unions continue to reject.
