New Controversy In Awujale Selection

A senior chief in Ogun State has called for a full investigation into alleged corruption surrounding the ongoing process to select the next Awujale of Ijebuland.

Prof Fassy Yusuf, secretary of the Ijebu Council of Chiefs and vice chairman of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, made the appeal while addressing concerns over how the process is being handled.

He said the call became necessary due to claims that some individuals are attempting to manipulate the process by pushing preferred candidates.

Yusuf warned that such actions run against the 2022 Obas and Chiefs Law, which treats all eligible princes equally and does not permit favouritism of any kind.

Yusuf maintained that the Fusengbuwa Ruling House had followed the rules and invited authorities to point out any wrongdoing if discovered.

As far as the Fusengbuwa Ruling House is concerned, we have done our part. But if there is any malpractice from our side, they should point it out.

If anyone has soiled their hands, such persons should be made scapegoats. Equity demands clean hands. He added that anyone found undermining the process must be held responsible.

He also urged the state government to explain why the process was suspended, saying clarity would restore confidence. For the governor to suspend the process, there must be reasons. Government has all the apparatus to investigate both the immediate and remote causes.

Meanwhile, Ijebu-Ode council chairman Dare Alebiosu said the pause was meant to prevent wrongdoing and confirmed that the process would resume. He denied reports of any chief being suspended.

That is not true, and we have issued a statement to clarify the situation. Contestants also appealed for fairness, warning that the Awujale stool must not be left to the highest bidder.
