Police Arrest Masquerade At Akwa Ibom

Police in Akwa Ibom State have taken three men into custody after a masquerade outing turned violent in Etinan Local Government Area, disrupting calm in the community.

The arrests followed complaints from residents over disorderly conduct linked to cultural displays.

The incident happened on Friday afternoon at Mbioto II Village, Etinan, where police acted on an emergency report from a concerned caller.

Officers were quickly deployed to the area after reports that masquerades were causing unrest and fear among locals.

Those arrested were identified as Kenneth Bassey, aged 31, Ofonime Isaac, 25, and Paul Samuel Bassey, 21.

Investigators said the trio, believed to be involved in the masquerade activity, were picked up at the scene and taken into custody for questioning.

Police authorities said the suspects are currently being held and are providing useful details to assist ongoing investigations.

The Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammad Azare, restated the command’s resolve to keep public order across the state.

While acknowledging the place of tradition and culture, he warned that any practice that leads to violence, threats or public disorder will face firm legal action.
