The New Nigeria Peoples Party has declared that Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is free to decide his political future without seeking approval from Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The party said the governor can remain in the NNPP or move to another party, including the APC, based on his personal judgment.
The clarification came on Monday in Lagos through the NNPP National Secretary, Ogini Olaposi, following public reactions to comments from Kwankwaso’s camp on Yusuf’s reported defection plans.

The party said such reactions do not reflect the realities within the NNPP.
The NNPP explained that Governor Yusuf, as the party’s only sitting governor, is protected by the Constitution and cannot be restricted by any individual or group. It added that political loyalty cannot override constitutional rights.

The party said it would prefer Yusuf to stay, but it has no intention of forcing him to remain if he chooses another path. According to the NNPP, compelling a governor to stay against his will would amount to political intimidation.
The NNPP urged all political actors linked to the matter to allow the governor focus on governance in Kano State. It reaffirmed its support for Yusuf regardless of his final decision and restated that Kwankwaso no longer holds any position or authority within the party.
