The Federal Government has approved billions of naira for aircraft maintenance, with Vice President Kashim Shettima’s official jet receiving the largest share of funds allocated for engine overhauls within the Presidential Air Fleet.

Budget records show that between 2024 and 2026, a total of N10.61 billion was set aside to overhaul the engines of the Gulfstream G550 used by the vice president, making it the single biggest maintenance item among fleet aircraft during President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The spending follows repeated technical issues involving the aircraft in 2024, which led to the cancellation of official trips abroad, prompting urgent repairs and increased funding for engine work over the three-year period.

Figures from appropriation bills reveal that engine maintenance across the Presidential Air Fleet cost N19.27 billion in total, with Shettima’s aircraft alone accounting for more than half of that amount, while other jets also received allocations for similar work.
Aviation experts say the rising costs are linked to the age of the aircraft, noting that older jets require frequent and costly overhauls, even as critics question the size and expense of the fleet at a time of economic pressure in the country.
