A former senator from Rivers South East, Magnus Abe, has said political loyalty to President Bola Tinubu cannot coexist with open confrontation against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

He spoke on Tuesday while reacting to his appointment as Chairman of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, a message widely seen as directed at Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara amid the deepening political divide in the state.

The comment came at a time of rising tension between Wike and Fubara, with Abe stepping into the debate by linking Tinubu’s political base in Rivers to Wike’s influence and structure.
Abe said Wike played a central role in mobilising support that delivered Rivers State to Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, despite the political risks involved at the time.

He explained that his appointment reflected Tinubu’s leadership style, which rewards loyalty, trust, and capacity, adding that his new role gives him a chance to contribute to national growth through the energy sector.
Abe also reaffirmed his political alignment with Wike, noting that their long and complex relationship has shaped recent political outcomes in Rivers, especially since Tinubu’s victory and the formation of the Renewed Hope political bloc in the state.
