No fewer than 30 people were killed on Friday after armed men suspected to be bandits attacked a village market in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The attackers stormed Kasuwan Daji market in Demo village, along the Kabe axis, where they set shops and stalls on fire and looted food items and other goods. Residents said the gunmen shot at traders and villagers before escaping with several abducted victims through routes leading to the Kainji Lake National Park forest.
The area around the forest has become a hideout for armed groups linked to repeated attacks on border communities in Niger State.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, said a joint security team had visited the scene.
“Over 30 people lost their lives during the attack. Some were kidnapped, and efforts are ongoing to rescue the victims,” he said.
Security agencies have launched operations in the area as residents express fear of further attacks, with many nearby communities remaining vulnerable.
