The Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress has withdrawn its support from Rivers State Governor Siminilayi Fubara and shifted allegiance to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, signaling a fresh turn in the state’s political crisis.

The announcement was made on Saturday by the group’s chairman, Senator George Sekibo, during Wike’s visit to Okrika Local Government Area, where party leaders and community figures gathered in large numbers.
The event took place in Okrika, a key riverine area in Rivers State, with strong political influence among the Ijaw people and long-standing ties to both camps in the ongoing power struggle.
The congress said its decision was driven by loyalty, recalling Wike’s role in supporting the emergence of Fubara as governor and his continued backing of Ijaw politicians across the state.

Leaders of the group explained that the choice followed internal consultations, after which they resolved to stand with Wike, whom they believe has consistently supported their people and political interests.
During the visit, local government officials, women leaders, and youth representatives also declared support for Wike and President Bola Tinubu, while the minister urged unity and cautioned traditional rulers to guide their communities without interfering in political activities ahead of 2027.
