A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has ordered a speedy hearing in a lawsuit challenging the planned rollout of the 2025 Tax Acts, while refusing to stop the Federal Government from moving ahead with the laws for now.

The case was filed by the Incorporated Trustees of African Initiative for Abuse Public Trustees against the Federal Republic of Nigeria and key government officials, including the Attorney-General of the Federation and the leadership of the National Assembly.
The dispute centres on alleged flaws in the tax laws and concerns over their proposed start date of January 1, 2026, which the group says could harm public interest if implemented without proper review.

The plaintiffs asked the court to block the government from enforcing the tax laws until the main case is decided and to shorten the time allowed for the defendants to respond. They also requested permission to serve court papers through alternative means.
Justice Bello Kawu, ruling on the application, approved an accelerated hearing of the main suit and allowed substituted service on the defendants through the offices of the Attorney-General and the National Assembly clerk.
However, the judge declined to grant an interim order stopping the implementation of the tax laws, insisting that all parties must first be properly notified. The case was adjourned to December 31 for hearing of the motion on notice.
